One in every ten American adults has used an online dating site or a mobile dating app. The questions we have used to measure online dating have evolved over the years, and as a result we cannot directly compare the size of the total online dating population to some of our earlier surveys on the subject. Urban and suburban residents are more likely than rural residents to use online dating, and those who have attended college are around twice as likely to do so as are those who have not attended college. Of course, only a portion of the population is in the market for a relationship at any given time. Some are currently in long-standing relationships that predate the adoption of online dating, while others are single but not actively looking for a romantic partner. This does not include users of mobile dating apps, which will be discussed in the next section of the report.

I recently clicked on this article from NPR in my Twitter feed. The basic premise is that college students, who used to be the least likely demographic to use a mobile dating app, are now the most likely. What instantly jumped out was the basis for the conclusion: a Pew Research Center survey of 2, U. There are two highly-correlated reasons why this caught my eye:. Surveys are great for certain softer questions to either gauge perception or capture what people intend to do in the future.
But qualitative research and surveys can be flawed: people often say one thing and do another. To truly understand behaviors and habits on a mobile, why not go straight to the hard data? So for fun see number 1 above I decided to give a few of the stats in the article a quick check from our mobile app usage data based on tens of millions of anonymous profiles.

H ere in San Francisco, technology has become a typical way to find love. In my opinion, though, it still feels a little weird and unnatural to find romance with just one touch of a screen. Sure, people do it — and succeed at it — all the time. A friend of mine wrote an article about this , explaining that she used to be embarrassed to admit that she met her boyfriend on Tinder.
5. Facebook (Android, iOS).
While there are a ton of different apps available, they each offer unique and exclusive features. So which service will you choose to help you find the one? Some other websites may be older, but Tinder is undoubtedly the most famous dating app out there. As successful as it is at forming long-distance relationships and successful marriages, Tinder has long been accused of changing dating into some form of hookup game.
Thankfully, the Tinder app no longer requires you to have a Facebook account, but you do have to be older than 18 to sign up. Once enabled, you set up a concise profile that consists of a character bio and up to six images we suggest always including a photo or your best selfie. Discovery settings allow you to set preferences for who can find your profile, from distance and proximity to age range. The photos are large, the app is — comparatively speaking — elegant, and setting up your profile is pretty painless.
All things considered, Tinder gets an A for its usability. Also, no one can message you unless you have also expressed an interest in them, which means you get no unsolicited messages. While there are a fair few people on Tinder who use it strictly to collect swipes, many people are actually inclined to meet up in real life, which is not always the case with dating apps. Dating is a numbers game, and Tinder has numbers on its side — even if the app itself is widely regarded to be one of the buggiest around.
